There are a couple of problems which come to mind immediately, besides the already mentioned fact that we are no longer in the Garden of Eden, and why. One problem is that the Hebrew words (there is more than one) translated “herb” or “herbs” are rather generic in their meanings. It is not a meaning of a specific form or use of plant life as some think of “herbs” (healing / medicinal) now.
The Hebrew words translated “herbs” in many versions of the Bible simply means plants or grass -- sometimes animal fodder, or cultivated vegetables and cereal grain for humans, or tender green plants, or the vegetation that grew on roof tops or in courtyards. But still plants of a very ordinary character and use. There is really nothing particularly spiritual about “herbs.” Making the English word “herb” in our Bible mean a special class of plants designated and separated by God as healing plants is poor scholarship.
Are You a “Believer?”
So -- do you believe in Herbs? Why? Have you been misinformed by sincere folks about herbs’ supposed value and power? What does the evidence say? Are you aware that you might be making health care choices based on faulty information? Is your commitment one based on emotion? The Bible? Your experience? Reputable knowledge?
How were your herbs chosen? Muscle testing or some other sham practice? Do you “recruit” for herbs? Could you stop using herbs? Would you stop? Has your view of the world and Christian walk become tangled in herbs and what you eat? In our hunger to make life work and to “do it God’s way” we can fall into legalism and bondage. We can bear things to each other and the world that are not truth. There is a lot of false teaching in the Christian “Herb Camp.”
Do I “believe” in herbs? No, I don’t. There are undoubtedly new plants and uses that will be discovered, and we will benefit. But the kingdom of God is not food or drink or herbs. We are saved by grace and kept by grace.
Herbs are fallen too.
